World's Largest Thin Film Solar Farm Goes Online
East Germany (TGW) – The world’s largest thin film solar farm, built by Juwi, has begun operation in Germany at the Waldponez Solar Park.
The power plant was built on the site of a former East German air base and has the surface area equivalent to 200 soccer fields.
Though the farm is not yet fully operational, it will be by 2009, when it will be able to produce 40 megawatts of electricity.
The facility will use 550,000 thin film modules, of which 350,000 have already been installed.

But, at night it will produce zero mW and have to be backed up by a convential plant. It will only produce 40mW under ideal conditions. True average output will be around 10mW. So to replace one nuclear plant, they will have to cover roughly 100 x 200 = 20,000 soccer fields and in 50 years (or so) they will have to landfill the remnants. They'd get more valuable use out of 20,000 soccer fields.
Solar power is only useful when you are too far away from the grid to be connected to real power.
Global warming MUST be stopped, but solar power is useless (think first conservation, then nuclear power).
The remnants could be likely be mostly recycled as they are mostly metals, glass and high grade minerals.
At least a lot easier than the nuclear powplant can be dealt with lett alone the nuclear waste it produces during it's lifespan.
Also allthough the area seems big taking only 1% of Germany landspace would mean 3,500 times as much area and would be more than the total of installed powerplants currently in Germany (about 130,000 MW).
And large areas converted to solar energy can be well hidden from view by surrounding them with trees which is a lot less view polluting than a nuclear powerplant is.
Also, allthough not done here, there is room for combining large solar power areas with wind and termal energy stations.
