$2000 "Wind Turbine in a Box" for Homeowners Unveiled

Your roof (TGW) – The Michigan Alternative and Renewable Energy Center today unveiled its first commercial product, a $2000 wind “wind turbine in a box”.

Source: EarthTronics

The 36-inch turbines are planned to be sold at home improvement centers for homeowners to provide from 10 to 20% of their electricity.

The genius is in the design (patent pending) of the turbine; it is gearless and therefore there is less friction.

The company Earthtronics will develop, manufacture, and market the turbine under the name WindTronics, which could be put into production by the first quarter of 2009.

The company is also looking at developing a smaller, cheaper version for developing countries that need very little power.

So if I bought 10 of these would it supply 100% of my needs?

And what's with that plug at the end...it looks like a surge protector. More information on how to hook up to home grid please...

It will only produce 10% of your power when wind conditions are absolutely perfect. You would prob ably need 100 on a normal day and still be connected to the grid when the wind isn't blowing. The amount of power produced by a wind turbine is proportional to the area swept by the blades. There is no such thing as a small wind turbine that can do anything useful unless you repeal the laws of physics. These rip-offs have been around for years. However, they are probably fun toys - if I was rich I'd buy one and use it to power the light in my garden shed.

The newer models of vertical wind turbine keep getting smaller, sleeker, and more efficient with each new design. Besides the benefits previously mentioned, recent models currently boast of the following; a lower profile on rooftops, not subject to the same regulations as their horizontal counterparts, less noise, almost no vibration, lower maintenance and repair costs due to fewer moving parts, and self regulation spin speeds in high wind circumstances.
